Information for potential graduate students and postdocs
I am always happy to discuss research opportunities with potential graduate students and postdocs interested in eco-evo-devo, plasticity, competition, spadefoots or nematodes. Interested prospective graduate students and postdocs should contact me at nlevis@uark.edu with a description of research interests and experience and CV. Detailed information for the graduate application process can be found here. Students may be interested in reading this modest advice from Stephen Stearns as they prepare for graduate school.
Information for potential undergraduate students
Our lab highly values undergraduate research experiences and seeks to add ~2 students each year as space and interest permit. While each student will be considered on a case-by-case basis, second-year students and 2nd semester freshman are highly encouraged to apply. Both Honors and non-Honors students will be considered. In most cases, students will (at least initially) work closely with a graduate student or postdoc.
Our ideal students have a deep curiosity about biology, are highly motivated and detail oriented, are eager to work in a research focused and collegial environment, and are willing to work hard. Students are not expected to have lots of pre-existing knowledge or technical expertise but should demonstrate commitment to developing them.
As part of the lab, students will learn how to 1) read and become familiar with the scientific literature, 2) design experiments, 3) implement techniques necessary for their research project, 4) discuss their ideas collaboratively, 5) write a grant proposal, 6) analyze their data, 7) write a scientific paper, and 8) present their research at a State or National scientific conference.
Undergraduates should expect to meet with me or their laboratory mentor regularly and should expect intellectual and moral support from all lab members.
If our work interests you and the above details sounds appealing, please email nlevis@uark.edu with a description of research interests, experience, and CV to begin the conversation.
